This church was established in the Granton area as the result of the Church of Scotland policy of Church Extension, aimed at establishing churches in areas where population was increasing. The Old Kirk was previously located in Holyrood Road, Edinburgh, an area where the population was declining. The congregation was ‘translated’ (in other words moved) to Pennywell Road.
The building has been described as:
"By Gordon & Dey, 1952, determined to be new and ingenious. White rendered walls and deep eaves, the porch splayed invitingly out from the North aisle, its centre mullion forming a cross with the transom."
