Royston Primary School was opened in 1937, and celebrated its seventieth anniversary in 2007. It was built for the children from the Royston and Wardieburn areas, which mainly consisted of houses built at around the same time, also by Edinburgh Corporation, the local authority in those days.
During the Second World War, a medical centre was located in the school building and red crosses were painted on the roof to discourage enemy bombing. The roof has since been re-slated, so the traces of the markings are no longer visible.
The school continued in the same building, without any relocation or changes of name, until July 2010. Because of falling numbers of pupils it was then closed, along with a number of other schools in Edinburgh. Its catchment area was, we understand, divided between Granton and Forthview Primary Schools.
A sheltered housing development has since been built on the site, entered from Royston Mains Avenue rather than from Boswall Parkway.
